The nation that introduced the world to flatpack furniture, modular design and wind turbines is now introducing a wood-engineered wind turbine with a green credential that stands out.

Steel has been used for many years to build turbines, but it is not without its limitations. The trend towards taller turbines in order to capture stronger wind combined with the farms’ often remote location creates a logistical headache.

Enter the Swedish startup Modvion founded by former boat builder and carpenter David Olivegren. Its towers, which are made from layers of spruce laminated together in sections, are almost carbon-neutral.

The blades of this 105-metre giant, the tallest wood turbine tower in the World, began turning in December. It now generates enough electricity to power over 400 homes. It’s aptly named the Wind of Change.
