Global child mortality has reached a new low

According to new data from the United Nations, the number of children dying before their fifth birthday has reached a record low in 2022.

The global under-five death rate has decreased by 51% since the year 2000. Some countries have outpaced the fall in mortality, including Cambodia, Malawi and Mongolia, which reduced under-5 mortality by more 75 %.

“Behind these statistics lie the stories of midwives, skilled health personnel, and health workers protecting children from deadly diseases and vaccinating them, as well as community health workers visiting families to support them,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell.

Despite these encouraging statistics, the UN reported that 4.9 millions children under five years old would die in 2022. These deaths were mainly in sub-Saharan Africa, southern Asia and were caused by preventable or treatable conditions such as diarrhoea and malaria.

“It’s critical to improve access for women and children to quality health care services,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
