5. It’s like magic to be at a festival

Frank Cottrell Boyce, a children’s author, screenwriter for films like 24 Hour Party People and writer of the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, was struggling when his mother died. “In my grief, I lost my mojo,” recalls Cottrell-Boyce. “I remember thinking: ‘I have lost my magic. Where should I look?

In order to rekindle his passion for life, he literally studied magic. He is now bringing this sense of wonder, joy and hope to the Brighton Festival this year, as we find out in our interview. “Adults have so few opportunities to be vulnerable and honest. “It’s wonderful to see people’s defenses come down and they just say: ‘Wow,'” he says of curating the multi-arts, wonder-filled programme this year.
