In July 2025, British rock singer John Waite—the voice behind massive solo radio hits and former lead vocalist and bassist for the late-1970s band The Babys—was cruising down the highway in Kiowa County, Kansas. Waite and his bandmates were making their way toward Dodge City to perform a gig at the United Wireless Arena. There was just one tiny problem: their vehicle was traveling a bit faster than the posted speed limit.

When Kiowa County Sheriff's Sergeant Justin Rugg initiated the traffic stop, he was likely expecting a routine interaction with an impatient driver. Instead, he stepped up to the window and found himself face-to-face with one of his all-time musical heroes.

From Traffic Stop to Impromptu Photo Shoot

Once Sergeant Rugg realized who he had pulled over, any usual highway tension vanished into pure fanboy joy. Rather than standard police procedure, the encounter quickly morphed into a lighthearted photo session around the patrol car.

Waite and his group leaned over the hood of the cruiser in hilarious, mock-confused poses for social media pictures. The excitement was so contagious that even the local 911 dispatcher couldn't contain herself, later taking to social media to post about how thrilled she was just to be the person who dispatched the call for the stop in the first place.
