The Bluesmobile Just Got Built Out of 442 LEGO Bricks, Loudspeaker Included

A clever fan designer has recreated Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi's iconic 1974 Dodge Monaco in plastic bricks—complete with minifigures and that absurd giant roof speaker.

Back in June 1980, director John Landis, along with comedy icons Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, unleashed The Blues Brothers upon the world. Alongside unforgettable R&B cameos and endless dark sunglasses, the movie gave pop culture one of its greatest automotive heroes: the Bluesmobile. It was a battered, mountable-loudspeaker-equipped 1974 Dodge Monaco police car that could jump drawbridges, drive through shopping malls, and somehow keep rolling long after any normal vehicle would have surrendered to a heap of sparks.

Fast forward to today, and that legendary ride is getting a second life in plastic brick form. A fan creator known as vintagelover has designed a custom 442-piece LEGO version of the Bluesmobile and submitted it to the official LEGO Ideas platform.

Big Attitude, Small Piece Count

What makes this custom build so neat is how much personality is packed into a relatively compact set. At just 442 pieces, it captures all the signature grimy charm of the original film car, right down to the oversized speaker strapped to the roof for announcing upcoming gig dates.

Naturally, the set wouldn't be complete without the brothers themselves. The proposal includes minifigures of both Jake and Elwood Blues, decked out in their trademark black suits, fedoras, and shades. But the designer didn't stop at making the exterior look accurate. Despite the build's modest scale, the car's interior is engineered to seat up to four minifigures—which means you can actually cram half the band in there for the ride—and even features a dedicated accessory storage compartment right behind the seats.

The Otterly Interesting Part

There is something delightfully fitting about bringing the Bluesmobile into the LEGO universe. During the filming of the 1980 movie, the production team famously broke a world record for the number of cars destroyed in a single film, wrecking dozens of police cruisers to pull off those chaotic, glorious chase scenes.

Translating that kind of unhinged cinematic destruction into LEGO form feels like a stroke of genius. If your brick-built Bluesmobile clips a mall display or takes a rough landing off a bookshelf, you don't need a mechanic—you just snap the fender back into place and keep on rolling. It is practically built for high-speed living room crashes.

What Happens Next?

Before this custom ride has a chance to turn into an official box set you can buy at the store, it has a road trip ahead of it. On the LEGO Ideas platform, any creation needs to gather 10,000 fan votes before the company's official design board will consider turning it into a real product.

Whether it makes it to retail shelves or remains a glorious fan creation, it's a fantastic homage to a piece of movie history. Which iconic movie vehicle from the '80s would you want to build next?
