The Soup Recipe That Has Fought Off Four Generations of Colds

Great-grandma wrote it on an envelope in 1952. The family still swears by it.

When anyone in the Okafor family feels a cold coming on, somebody makes The Soup. The recipe lives on a browned envelope, written in 1952, with instructions like "ginger — enough to be brave" and "simmer until the kitchen smells like care." Four generations have now been raised on it. The current custodian, 26-year-old Ada, has laminated a copy but keeps the original envelope framed. "It has never cured anything medically," she admits. "But nobody has ever felt uncared for after a bowl."

Does your family have a recipe that is really a hug?
