The Repair Café Where Broken Things (and Spirits) Get Fixed

Volunteers fix toasters, lamps and toys for free. They mostly mend people's hope.

On the first Saturday of the month, the church hall fills with volunteers armed with screwdrivers, sewing kits, and soldering irons. Bring your broken toaster, your wobbly chair, your teddy with the droopy ear — they will try to fix it for free. Retired electrician Frank, 74, has repaired 200+ lamps and delivered each one back with a full diagnosis. "People do not just want the lamp fixed," he says. "They want to believe things can be fixed." The lamps are almost beside the point.

What broken thing are you keeping for sentimental reasons?
