I Complimented a Stranger Every Day for a Month

A shy barista set herself one tiny brave task a day — and it rewired how she sees everyone.

Maya describes herself as "professionally shy," so her September challenge sounded absurd: give one genuine compliment to a stranger, every day, for thirty days. Day one was "great umbrella" to a man at the lights. By week two she was telling a busker his version of Wonderwall was better than the original (he agreed, solemnly). The surprise was not that people smiled — it was that she started noticing good things everywhere, automatically. "My brain got trained to look for what to praise," she says. "It is a very nice brain to live in."

Who could you compliment today — and what is stopping you?
