New hobby rule: you must be terrible for the first month

Here is a rule worth stealing: when you start a hobby, you are not allowed to be good at it for thirty days. Not allowed. Your pottery can wobble. Your Spanish can be a crime scene. Your running pace can embarrass the family dog.

The first month is for collecting hilarious failures and finding out whether you like the thing underneath the skill. Skill arrives later, quietly, while you are busy enjoying yourself.

Being bad at something is the cover charge for being good at it.
