These Pre-Teens Cut 50 Lawns for Free and Unlocked the Ultimate Grass-Cutting Jackpot

Ja’Torrian and Tevin were sharing a single beat-up lawnmower to help out their neighbors. Then a legendary grass-cutting hero stepped in.

When you were 11 years old, your main financial strategy was probably begging for an allowance increase or hoping to find a loose quarter under the couch cushions. Ja’Torrian Taylor and Tevin Rice had a slightly different vision.

Out in Gadsden, Alabama, these two ambitious pre-teens decided they wanted to start a lawn care business. There was just one tiny logistical problem: they didn't actually own a full set of equipment. In fact, all they had was a single, heavily broken-in lawnmower donated by a neighbor. Most people would look at one sputtering mower shared between two kids and call it a day. Ja’Torrian and Tevin looked at it and saw an empire waiting to happen.

The Karate Belt System of Grass Cutting

Enter Rodney Smith Jr., widely known as the 'Lawnmower Man.' Back in 2015, Rodney launched an initiative called Raising Men & Women Lawn Care Service. His idea was simple yet brilliant: challenge kids across the country to mow 50 lawns for free for senior citizens, military veterans, single parents, or neighbors with disabilities.

To make things even cooler, the 50 Yard Challenge operates like a martial arts belt system, but with t-shirts. Kids sign up and start with a white shirt. Once they complete 10 lawns, they unlock orange. Then green at 20, blue at 30, red at 40, and finally, the coveted black shirt at 50 lawns. By mid-2026, over 6,000 young people across the United States had signed up to take on the challenge.

Ja’Torrian and Tevin decided to tackle the entire quest together. Sharing their single trusty mower, they took turns pushing, trimming, and knocking out yard after yard for their local community in Alabama.

Unlocking the Grand Prize

When a participant hits that final 50-lawn milestone, Rodney doesn't just mail them a congratulations card. He personally travels to deliver the ultimate startup kit.

After the duo logged their 50th free yard, Rodney paid them a visit in Gadsden. He handed over their black shirts, but he didn't stop there. To help the boys officially launch their dream enterprise—TJ & JT Mowing Service—he surprised them with brand-new lawnmowers, leaf blowers, and trimmers of their very own. No more sharing a single worn-out mower. They were now fully equipped, fully independent business partners.

The Otterly Interesting Part

There is something deeply satisfying about turning summer chores into an actual video game quest line. By framing community service as a level-up system with unlocked gear at the end, the challenge taps into something pretty magical. You start out pushing a sputtering machine through tall grass for a white t-shirt, and you finish as a black-belt neighborhood legend with a shiny new fleet of power tools.

The Cutting Edge of Hustle

It turns out that helping out your neighbors is a pretty spectacular way to get ahead. Ja’Torrian and Tevin spent their free time making life easier for people in their community, and they walked away with a fully stocked business venture before even entering middle school.

So, what's your excuse for postponing that weekend yard work? If two 11-year-olds can conquer 50 lawns with one borrowed mower, the rest of us can probably handle tackling our own backyard this Saturday.
