How a Very Good Great Dane Accidental-Peed Her Way Into World War II History

Meet Juliana, the Great Dane who earned two medals for heroism—starting with a perfectly timed bathroom break over a live explosive.

We’ve all had moments where poor timing turned out to be a total blessing in disguise. But almost none of us can claim that an urgent need to use the bathroom saved an entire house from going up in flames. Enter Juliana, a Great Dane living in the UK during World War II, who managed to become a decorated hero through sheer, glorious bodily functions.

A Highly Unconventional Bomb Squad

In April 1941, during the height of wartime air raids, an incendiary bomb crashed through the roof of Juliana’s home. Incendiary devices were designed to start destructive fires, making them an immediate, terrifying hazard for anyone nearby. While most living creatures would naturally panic or hide under a blanket, Juliana took a decidedly different approach.

She stood directly over the fizzing explosive and peed on it.

Whether Juliana possessed an uncanny instinct for bomb disposal or simply experienced a moment of extreme bladder desperation remains one of history’s best unanswered questions. Either way, her perfectly targeted relief completely extinguished the device before it could ignite the house.

The Only Double Blue Cross Medalist in History

For her quick thinking, Juliana was awarded her very first Blue Cross Medal in April 1941. In the UK, honors like the Blue Cross Medal and the PDSA Dickin Medal recognize extraordinary animal bravery during wartime. But Juliana was far from a one-hit wonder.

Fast forward to November 1944. Juliana’s owners, the Britton family, ran a shoe shop. When a fire broke out in the store, Juliana didn't need a repeat performance of her 1941 trick. Instead, she barked furiously to alert her family to the danger, allowing them to escape unharmed and call for help.

That second act of vigilance earned Juliana a second Blue Cross Medal, making her the only animal in history to ever receive the honor twice.

The Otterly Interesting Part

What makes Juliana's story so charming is the contrast in how she earned her accolades. Her second medal was textbook heroism—alerting humans to danger like a classic movie dog. But her first medal was peak canine chaos. It’s a hilarious reminder that sometimes history isn't made by grand tactical strategy, but by a 130-pound dog who just really needed to go.

A Hero Lost to Time

Despite her legendary achievements and unique place in history, Juliana’s tale largely faded from public memory after the war. But if there’s one lesson to take away from her double-decorated life, it’s that heroes come in all shapes, sizes, and bladder capacities.

The next time your pet does something completely bizarre in the living room, don't be too quick to scold them—they might just be defending the realm.
